Art Deco Queen Mary

Art Deco was believed to have started at the exposition internationale des arts decoratifs et industriels modernes (International exposition of modern industrial and decorative arts) held in Paris in 1925. It had actually been around for around 15 years before then. It had started around 1910 but was little known outside Europe. The term Art Deco itself was not used until Bevis Hillier published the book entitled “Art Deco of the 20’s and 30’s” in 1968.
It was not until 1925 after the International exhibition that it really took off, it was the end of the war and the colour and styles brightened up ur homes. It swept over Europe during the late 20’s and early 30’s soon moving to America where it became an instant hit. The world seemed to take on the theme when erecting new buildings, architects across the globe designed buildings based on the theme. Many of these buildings have become landmarks in their respective countries.
The combination of movements within art deco makes it unique, it uses a mixture of Cubism, Art Nouveau, Modernism, Futurism, Constructivism and Neoclassical.
The use of strange materials like sharkskin and zebraskin mixed with aluminium, stainless steel, laquer and vibrant colours made it highly sought after.
The style was used for everything including jewellery, pottery, furniture, interior decor and house design. It was even used for structures like churches, bridges and even went so far as to play a part in the design of the queen mary ocean liner.
The recession of the late 1930’s saw the demise of art deco, although it did carry on in the buildings and structures that had been built. It made somewhat of a comeback in the sixties before making a big comeback in the eighties. A sudden interest in film noir and the elegance of the 1930’s gave it a boost, original pieces soon became sought after by collectors.
The surge in antique shows on national television also boosted the art deco movement, especially the work of Clarice Cliff who is famous for her pottery.
